Artificial intelligence (AI) can be categorized into different types based on its capabilities and functionalities. Here are the main types of artificial intelligence:
- Narrow AI (Weak AI): Also known as Weak AI, Narrow AI refers to AI systems that are designed and trained for a specific task. These systems operate under a limited pre-defined set of conditions and do not possess general intelligence. Most AI applications today, including virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, fall under this category.
- General AI (Strong AI): General AI refers to artificial intelligence that has the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge in a way that is indistinguishable from human intelligence. This level of AI does not currently exist and is a topic of theoretical discussion. General AI would have the ability to perform any intellectual task that a human being can do.
- Artificial Superintelligence (ASI): Artificial Superintelligence refers to a hypothetical AI that surpasses human intelligence in virtually every aspect. ASI is purely theoretical at this point and represents an intellect that is much smarter than the best human brains in practically every field, including scientific creativity, general wisdom, and social skills.
